Dental Emergency FAQs
We know how alarming a dental emergency can be. That’s why we’ve got a great process in place for when an unfortunate situation does happen (which is usually a case of when not if!), here in the Ripon area, we’ve also got a team of experts ready to lend a hand and get you patched back up on the road to recovery. Let’s answer some common dental emergency FAQs so you’ll know exactly what to do in an emergency.
Do I have a dental emergency?
This is a great question, and definitely the first you should be asking yourself! A dental emergency could be:
- A cracked or broken tooth
- A missing tooth (e.g. knocked out)
- Pain in the teeth or jaw
- Bleeding gums
- An injury (e.g. cuts or bites)
What doesn’t count as a dental emergency?
Cases of lost fillings, broken appliances and chipped veneers may not count – unless they’re causing extreme pain or bleeding. If you’re in any doubt, call our practice near Ripon or speak to 111.
When would I call 999?
It’s really difficult to say, but an example could be if you’re having trouble breathing (for example, from swelling or inflammation). Or, if you have a problem like a broken jaw and can’t get to A&E. Facial trauma can be another cause for emergency. Again, our practice or the 111 number can advise you.
What happens in an emergency appointment?
We’ll aim to get you as comfortable as possible. We might extract a tooth; carry out an X-ray; prescribe an antibiotic or pain relief; refer you to a medical expert; book a follow-up at the practice; and carry out treatments such as temporary crowns or fillings. It varies depending on the situation, but you can always count on getting the best possible care.
